Colonic Hydrotherapy

So, why would anyone possibly want to have colonics? Some think of it as a distasteful procedure that would result in pure embarrassment. However, to the brave few that trust in an ancient therapy, they find it is actually quite modest, soothing, and refreshing. Not to mention the health imparting benefits one will receive with colon hydrotherapy. Countless individuals, who would not be here to tell there story otherwise, rose from levels of true desperation with the help of colonics restoring their life and renewing their health.

As mentioned in other articles throughout this website, life is a balance of yang and yin, building up and breaking down, or digestion and elimination. What goes in MUST COME OUT!!! Therefore, for every meal that goes in the mouth, one must come out the opposite end. In some people this is stimulated naturally through the "gastro-colic reflex" or more commonly known as the "gotta-go reflex" experienced after the morning meal. Indigenous societies and observed animals are witnessed to still have this reflex in tact and have a bowel movement after each meal. This means they have three bowel movements a day or 21 a week or 84 a month!!! Compare that to one every other day, or every few days, or the record thus far by a patient of Dr. Iverson—only ONE in an entire 25 DAYS! That would be just 12 POOPS A YEAR!!! Where does all the extra waste go??? Well, it will sit there, hangout and ferment, rot, reabsorb, toxify and pollute the body...make the person feel ill...what else could it do??? Think about a piece of meat kept in a 98.6 degree environment for days on end and how it smells at the end of just one day. WHAT GOES IN MUST COME OUT!!!! Not only come out, but also come out within a proper amount of transit time, which is about 24 hours for a healthy individual. Food eaten the day before should be out the next day.

Total Toxic Burden

You may ask, so what is the point? Total Toxic Burden is the point! The total toxic burden is a summation of all the harmful chemicals that we come in contact with over time. Our bodies are exposed to numerous daily toxic waste byproducts from the digestion of food, the breakdown of our dead cells, and the environmental poisons which our body is continually filtering. Internally generated waste products such as carbon dioxide, urea, nitrogen, food and fecal wastes, as well as bacterial generated wastes and excess hormones like estrogens are a few of the common harmful byproducts of humans. Contaminants from external sources such as pesticides (DDT) and herbicides, hydrocarbons like gasoline derivatives, plastics and Styrofoam, medications, antibiotics, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde, paint and glues, and common household cleaning solvents can all have a very deleterious effect on humans. When a healthy individual is exposed to these harmful chemicals in small doses they are cleared by the kidneys through the urine and the liver through the bile and out the bowels. However, a person with weakened clearance ability can circulate and accumulate these toxins which may negatively affect enzyme pathways, glands, nerves and the immune system resulting in numerous symptoms listed below.

The Digestive Tube

From the tube that begins with the mouth and ends with the anus lies 28 feet or more of digestive tract. This tube is as long as a semi-truck and within its many folds is lined with thousands of little fingers. These fingers also have even smaller fingers on them, called microfingers (or microvilli), spanning more than 2000 sq feet of surface area...that is as large as a tennis court! These little fingers, or "villi", grab and absorb particles of digested food as it passes through, that is, if they are functioning at their optimum level. Amongst these microvilli in healthy persons live billions of good bacteria that act as the first line immune defense against the unhealthy bad bacteria and allergens found in our foods. Probiotics, as they are called, crowd out the bad bugs and strengthen lining of the intestines, so bacteria, yeast, virus, parasites, and fungus won't over populate and create illness. They also make many essential vitamins, such as the B vitamins, niacin, folic acid, pyridoxine, cobalamin, biotin, and vitamin K that are important for proper health.

If one's digestive track is in an inflamed state due to unhealthy food choices and environmental chemicals, mucous can be produced in excess which can be the beginning of poor health. On the cellular level this mucous coats the microvilli fingers inhibiting proper nutrient absorption. Without the proper nutrients being absorbed the entire body suffers as symptoms slowly emerge sending a warning signal of the impending mal-nourishment. All inflammation is a preliminary marker for future disease if not relieved and resolved. In the gut it can cause excess mucous that results in deficiency states through mal-absorption.

Constipation is the most common digestive complaint in America. It is also the most preventable digestive complaint if adequate water, ample vegetables, and physical activity are in proper balance, along with not ignoring the urge to defecate. Medical studies show that up to 27% of the American general population admit to suffering from constipation. 1 This would be constipation as defined by the conventional medical model which considers a stool every three days as regular and normal. In other words, 27% of America is having less than one or two bowel movements a week!! According to Dr. Iverson's figures over 70% of his patients have some degree of sluggish digestion resulting in constipation and the inflammatory state that coincides. Constipation and other irregularities can lead to diverticulosis, or "pockets" of fecal waste in the colon wall, which can become progressively irritated and lead to diverticulitis or irritated bowel. Advanced forms of chronic constipation can also lead to hemorrhoids, fissures, prolapsus, diarrhea, appendicitis, and the degenerative states of irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bowel disease, and cancer.

Elimination Channels

The body has multiple methods to relieve itself of waste if it is insufficiently able to do so through the colon. Kidneys clean blood through urine, liver through bile, lymphatics through lymph, lungs through breath, and the skin through sweat. If the bowel is inhibited then other organs in the body may have to compensate to eliminate the extra burden. Toxic waste overload signs can often be seen in the result of cloudy and smelly urine, swollen glands, coated tongue, bad breath, and skin ailments of many types.

So, we wash our hair, scrub our body, and brush our teeth...why wouldn't we clean our own septic system? So how does a colonic work? As warm water is gently introduced into the colon, dried fecal matter soaks up the water and becomes soft and loose, just as we might soak a pan with baked-on food to clean more easily. As well, the introduction of water into the colon stimulates the natural movement of the bowels called peristalsis. It literally exercises the muscles of the intestine as the water squeezes back out of the colon. This exercise improves the sluggishness of the bowels and helps the muscle tone for elimination of future bowel movements. As water is able to work its way further through the large intestine, it is absorbed and transported from the portal circulation into the liver. This volume of fluid stimulates the liver to dump congested bile within its ducts into the intestines for elimination. The contents of the bile can consist of numerous toxic chemicals the liver had filtered which are mentioned above. Thus, this is considered the most important aspect of colon hydrotherapy- the final elimination of poisonous wastes. At the end of a colonic, an implant of good bacteria is introduced into the bowel to repopulate the bowel with healthy microorganisms.

The Procedure and Results

The procedure is very relaxing in a healing atmosphere with professional technicians that are trained in colon hydrotherapy. During the treatment the therapist will make you feel at ease as all measures are taken to maintain modesty and privacy. They will teach about the procedure, the benefits and educate about what is being seen in the elimination. They are also trained to stimulate particular acupressure points and massage the abdomen to facilitate elimination. At Tacoma Health we use a closed hydrotherapy system with the state-of-the-art Aquanet which undergoes triple water filtration and purification. Meet your friendly colonic therapist.

So, what is the result? Chronic symptoms improve such as digestive complaints like constipation and irregularity as well as abdominal pain, heartburn or acid stomach. Fatigue, aches and pains like muscle pain, joint pain, back ache and headaches, chronic yeast or bladder infections, menstrual irregularity, uterine complaints, immune depression or elevation, allergies, chemical sensitivities, mood-related illness including hyperactivity, sadness or nervousness, memory insufficiency, lymph gland swelling, excess or deficient sweating, sinusitis, skin diseases, arthritis, body odor, weight imbalance, and prostate complaints including BPH and prostatitis. Colonics can also be very helpful as an adjunct to the detoxification treatment of drug, alcohol, caffeine or nicotine addiction, and pharmaceutical drug residues. Does the list sound long? It is...that is just how valuable colonics can be!!

Maintaining excellent colon health by consuming adequate water preventing dehydration and dry stool, eating a diet rich in vegetables and other fiber, and avoiding high fat and sugary foods is one's assurance to good health. Pharmaceutical and illicit drugs can hinder natural bowel movements as well as other strong chemicals. Physical manipulation by massage and exercise keeps the peristalsis in movement. Of course periodic cleansing with the combination of herbal cleanses, hydrotherapy like castor oil packs, skin brushing, saunas, and of course colonics provides a healthful way to maintain good health. In conjunction with specific metabolic dietary and cleansing program, colonics can have a profound effect on health within as few as six sessions. During a cleansing protocol Dr. Iverson may recommend three or four in a row then as a maintenance two a week for four to eight weeks and then once every couple weeks for a year.
